From July 1st 2006 all eligible Working Holiday Makers can work with any one employer for six-months (previously three-months). This is for all applications made and approved after this date.
If you're aged 18 and not yet turned 31, and from one of the following countries: Germany, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, UK, Republic of Ireland, Canada, The Netherlands, Hong Kong (SAR), Japan, France, Italy, Malta, Republic of Cyprus, Estonia, Belgium, Republic of Korea, or Taiwan then you are eligible to apply for a 1-year Australian working holiday visa. Our advice is not to book anything until your visa is approved. There are few if any restrictions on what sort of work you can do, but you can only work for a maximum of SIX-MONTHS. with any one employer. If you are planning on studying on a working holiday visa you can do so for a maximum of three-months (four months after July 1st 2006). Perfect for an English course.
Not to be confused with the Working Holiday Visa is the Work and Holiday Visa: The Work and Holiday Visa is only available to passport holders from Iran, Thailand and Chile. Very soon (as of 15th November, 2006 still no news) the visa will be available to passport holders from Bangladesh and Turkey. The same work and study conditions as for the Working Holiday Visa apply, and holders can stay for up to 12-months. The application process is different as are the eligibilty requirements, for example: Applicants must have a University degree and an approval letter from their Government. There is a second year working holiday visa available.
To obtain this you must prove you have worked for a minimum of three-months in a area designated by the government to be regional for the purpose of harvest or fruit picking work. Regional Australia includes anywhere in Australia except Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, the NSW Central Coast, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Perth, Melbourne or the ACT. Seasonal work is defined as: picking fruit, nuts and other crops, pruning and trimming vines and trees, general maintenance crop work and other work associated with packing or processing the harvest.
From July 1st 2006 the definition of seasonal work has expanded to include
- picking fruit, nuts and other crops
- pruning and trimming vines and trees
- general maintenance crop work
- immediate processing of plant products
- other work associated with packing or transporting the harvest
- cultivating or propagating plants, fungi or their products or parts
- maintaining animals for the purpose of selling them or their bodily produce, including natural increase immediate processing of any products including shearing, butchery, packing and tanning manufacturing dairy produce from raw material
- conducting operations relating directly to taking or catching fish and other aquatic species
- conducting operations relating directly to taking or culturing pearls or pearl shell
- planting or tending trees in a plantation or forest that are intended to be felled
- felling trees in a plantation or forest, or
- transporting trees or parts of trees that were felled in a plantation or forest to the place where they are first to be milled or processed or from which they are to be transported to the place where they are to be milled or processed.
Who can apply for the 2nd year Working Holiday Visa?
- People in Australia on or after 1st November 2005, who have previously held a WHV, and done 3 months' seasonal harvest work as a working holiday maker can apply
- People who have previously held a WHV and done 3 months' seasonal work in regional Australia and have now left Australia may also be eligible, even if they left Australia before 1st November 2005
- There is no time limit for applying for a 2nd WHV as long as you meet the same requirements as for the first visa: for example, you must still be aged over 18 and not yet turned 31 at the time of application
- The visa costs $185
- A second working holiday visa allows you a total of 24 months in Australia. For example, you arrive on 1st January 2006. You apply for and are granted your second visa in October 2006. Your second visa only becomes active when your first visa expires on 1st January 2007 giving you another 12-months.
- You can also return to a previous employer and work for another 6-months
