The Northern parts of Australia have two seasons: wet and dry. The wet runs from November to April (summer) and the dry from May to October (winter). The months of May to October are best for places like Cairns and Darwin; November to April for places such as Sydney and Melbourne, or Tasmania. The ideal journey would begin in the South in March or April and plan to arrive in the North - Cairns or Darwin - in June, July, or August then begin to head south again. Keep in mind the temperature chart on this page is a GUIDE only. In Uluru it can get as hot as 40 degrees C in Summer and as cold as 0 degrees C in Winter.

How you travel is a matter of personal choice. You can go by bus with companies such as Oz Experience who specialise in trips that take you where others don't. If you are short on time or do not like long journeys then fly in one direction and catch a bus back the other. Or fly both ways and do a series of local guided trips with companies such as Adventure Tours Australia.  Whatever you do keep in mind that Australia is very big and travelling between places takes a long time, and a bit of planning.
