It is strongly advised to pre-book accommodation before arriving in Sydney. If you are arriving anywhere in Australia between mid-December to mid January you should book well in advance. The best hostels are always full so plan ahead for the best bed!

Private Apartments or Flats

Private Apartments or Flats are the best option if you are staying in one place for a while. Travellers are always coming and going so there is always a constant availability of rooms. One option is to look for a room to rent in a fully furnished flat that has at least two beds in each room. This allows for four people and keeps the costs down. Or you can simply rent your own fully furnished apartment. Couples can rent their own room or a "studio apartment." Expect to pay a security deposit or "bond" as we call it here, which is normally a months rent. As long as you look after the apartment you should have no problem getting this back. Popular locations to rent an apartment in Sydney are Bondi, Bondi Junction, the City, Manly Beach, and Coogee Beach. Yes, beaches are popular with travellers. Finding an apartment is not that difficult. We can help you look.

Price Guide

  • One person in a single room: $150 - $240 per-week
  • A fully furnished two-bedroom apartment: $350 - $450 per-week
  • A fully furnished one-bedroom apartment: $250 - $350 per-week
  • A studio apartment: $200 - $350 per-week

Accommodation Tips

  • In Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Byron Bay, Gold Coast, Hervey Bay, Airlie Beach, Cairns, and Darwin and Alice Springs (in the WInter), always book ahead for the best hostels. Sleeping Bags are not allowed in 99% of hostels. They will give you clean sheets and pillow cases for free. This is to keep out the bugs.
  • In quiet months many hostels have excellent long-term stay rates
  • Security Deposits are payable before you move in to the apartment. The landlord must lodge these with the Rental Bond Authority, which is a government agency. Always get a receipt.
  • Always inspect the apartment with the owner or landlord before you move in. Make a list of all the things that are dirty or broken. Sign the list and take a copy.
  • What happens when you move out? Do you have to clean the carpet or have the flat professionally cleaned? Always check the rules.
  • Three-months is a standard lease for a backpacker apartment. If you go to an agency they will ask for 6-months as this is the standard for locals.
